About The Research Hub

The Australia-India Critical Minerals Research Hub (AICMRH) was established following an MoU between IIT Hyderabad and Monash University, witnessed by Hon. Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education, India, and Hon. Jason Clare MP, Minister for Education, Australia. The Hub aims to address global challenges in critical minerals research and drive innovations for sustainable mining practices. The Ministry of Education has approved $1.1 million as the first installment in a $5 million funding plan under the SPARC Scheme to support AICMRH’s activities, including 10 HDR scholarships, 5 research fellowships, and collaborative visits for Australian scholars to India.

Specific Aim

The main aim of proposed hub will is to bring together leading academicians, researchers and industry leaders from both Australia and India to work on several joint projects related to development of methodology for exploration, extraction, processing and recycling of critical minerals. Leveraging the collective expertise of researchers and practitioners from diverse backgrounds within academia, research, and industry, the Hub is poised to drive impactful advancements in the critical minerals domain, fostering innovation and knowledge exchange on an international scale.

The main objectives of the India-Australia Critical Minerals research hub are to:

Deliver for India and Australia improved capabilities to mitigate the risks, and access the opportunities of critical minerals.

The India-Australia Critical Minerals Research Hub is built on the principles of collaboration, partnership, and complementarity.

Assemble leading experts in critical minerals assessment, economic geology, extraction, processing and separation, mining sustainability, and supply chain analyses.

Engage industry and government to work together strategically at an early stage

Incorporate extensive collaboration with partners from Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, UK, and USA, leaving the way open to extend this to a multi-lateral hub

Set up shared IP libraries to support R&D investments, avoid duplication, optimize allocation of resources, and save time
