Admission to the B.Tech program is through IIT-JEE. The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a common admission test for candidates seeking admission to the B.Tech program. It is conducted by all the IITs in the month of April every year. Candidates who have secured 60% (5% relaxation for SC/ST/PD) marks in aggregate in their respective board examination are eligible for the test. The JEE will be a single objective type examination which will test the comprehension and analytical abilities of students. Starting from 2012-August, IIT will admit 30 students in Chemical Engineering.



M.Tech admission is through GATE. The department reserves the right to conduct interviews for admission to the program even if the applicant has a valid GATE score. In addition to the two year M.Tech program, IITH also offers three year M.Tech program for which the admission is through interview. However, the department revers the right not to admit any one on three year program if suitable candidates are not found. Admission to PhD program is through interview. Interviews are done twice in an year. For admission to PhD program the applicant must have an M.Tech degree. However, exceptional candidates can apply for direct admission to PhD program after completing B.Tech. However, GATE score is mandatory for direct admission to PhD program, and the department reserves the right to call (or not to call) the candidate for interview after reviewing the application.
